A helper’s high

charity, Habits, Happiness, Human Brain, Karma, mindset

This is a term I learned today while I was reading the book 5 Day Weekend.

I have mentioned in multiple posts earlier how when I am feeling low, I try to see if I can donate something. Even Joe Polish talks about how if you’re feeling depressed – go and help someone. It’s not necessary to do it with money only.

You go to an old age home, or you could go and offer your services to an orphanage etc. When you see the fact that you have something to give and help, it changes your whole body and emotional state.

This phrase immediately struck me because I also feel a high which cancels out my depressive emotions the moment I give to charity.

However I have always felt that there is a Karmic reaction to doing good. When you do good by doing charity it sets in motion a whole set of emotions in your mind.

It improves your self esteem, improves your mood, reduces your stress levels and makes you more calm and peaceful. Since you are on a high by helping someone you also tend to become more grateful.

In the Indian thought process if you are facing a lot of bad luck in your life, then you can slowly start reversing the “bad” part by doing charity, by helping others.

Till next time then, be on a high by helping others and make this world a better place.

Thinking time- adding Beethoven, Mozzart & Jazz

Focus, Human Brain, Music, Thinking

This one will be a very short post.

I like to keep updating you on the successes I have with some activities which I have suggested to you earlier.

I have written multiple times on how if you can take out focused thinking time every day, you will be able to achieve much more in a day.

Last few days I have been using music from the various symphonies created by people like Beethoven, Mozzart. The symphonies they have created take your mind into a different zone for concentration and you are able to get into focus very fast. Assumption is you are sitting in a quiet room.

I have been a fan of Jazz since childhood. Especially the teams which play the trumpets, clarinets et al.

Since the Amazon Prime music has good selection of Jazz bands also, I tested them and I got the same benefits.

If getting focused thinking time is a challenge, I would suggest you try these music possibilities.

Till next time then.

The exciting life of a B2B salesperson

B2B, Sales

Today’s post is about the see-saw situation in the life of a sales person. I am speaking from a B2B perspective. I don’t know if this is true in consumer sales or in other professions also.

I used to be a sales person in my initial years, moved into different roles and today have responsibilities for both marketing and sales.

For over the last 30 odd years its so happened that when you start your day with some very positive news from a customer – like a customer whom you had been following up for months for an order, suddenly calling you and telling you they want to give you an order for a million dollars.

You are elated with the fact that you have been able to beat your competitors. The customer has found value in what you’re offering, they believe your company can deliver the goods and they have found you to be a genuine and resourceful person.

As you move through the day trying to close on this customer’s order and feel elated, towards the end of the day you will receive a crisis call from another customer.

This customer will then be firing you on all the things that are wrong with your product or service etc. So you end the day feeling very low. What started on a high ends on a low.

On the other hand I have also observed the reverse when the day starts with firing on all sides and ends on a happy note.

But this is what makes the life of a B2B salesperson exciting. All customers are nice. They are also people and they have problems. They call out and fire you because they have expectations that you will solve their problems. If you solve their problems they will stick to you for a long long time. You will build deep relationships, that will keep giving you business for multiple years.

Till next time then, enjoy the sales role.

Debt versus Liability- Part 2 – Happiness

Happiness, Liabilities, travel

In my post yesterday I wrote about how the book Killing Sacred Cows…. by Garrett Gunderson had got me thinking about how I can borrow money for productive use. The issue is that anything can be constituted as productive use

I have been thinking about this as to what could be easily classified as productive usage. So any borrowing for creating an asset that appreciates should be okay. Any borrowing which creates an appreciating asset and also does cash generation should be even better.

If the asset is depreciating but you generate cash many times over then also borrowing should be okay as long as the liabilities you are creating are less than the assets needed to service the liabilities.

Now happiness does not have a direct relationship with creating assets.

But if you are to look at yourself as the million dollar person who creates assets because of your ideas, then a happy million dollar person should be able to create even better assets. So creating liabilities to ensure that you get happy – like going on a cruise to Alaska – which can rejuvenate you and make you even more productive for a long period of time should be worth it.

As Dan Sullivan of Strategic Coach says, you need to put in free time into your calendar well in advance, ever so often , so that you’re operating at your best.

On the other hand a depreciating asset like a designer watch which aids your ego and is purchased by taking high cost credit card borrowing is not ok. This may give you momentary happiness , but soon you will be eyeing the next possession.

For me , I also get happy when I am surrounded by people who are thinking bigger ideas, different ideas or are just plain better than me in marketing or strategy.

Till now I used to wonder how I would finance these meetings and master – minds. This idea of debt versus liability, gives me an ability to do that. Once I am happy and my mind has also been expanded then I can be an even better and more productive asset.

I would think this can open up a whole new way to leverage growth,

Would love to hear your views if you think this makes sense.

Till next time then.
